Basic Layering Tips for Your Fashionable Winter Outfits

Winter is the layering season, and it’s all about staying cozy and warm whether you’re inside or outside. There are no preset rules when it comes to layering, but there is a certain amount of intention and confidence that comes from articles of clothing that layer perfectly together. Try experimenting with different layers while following the season’s trends. Layering is also a fun way to give your current wardrobe a refresh with new pieces. Here are some basic layering tips for your fashionable winter outfits.

Base Layer

The first layer on top is the one closest to your skin, so it may be snug or slightly loose-fitting, depending on what you want to layer over it. If your goal is to stay warm, you’ll probably choose a long-sleeved but lightweight top. The material should be soft and comfortable against your skin. Have you ever worn a wool sweater and forgot to wear something underneath it? It’s itchy. Also, many blouses require some type of layer underneath because the material may be sheer or semi-transparent. Look in the mirror and assess your best base layer for your ensemble.

Some common base layers include tanks, camis, fitted tees, turtlenecks, and structured blouses. Depending on what you layer over it, the base layer may peek out from the neckline, hemline, or sleeves. Your functional base layer can be basic or have a bit of personality; it just depends on what flows best with the rest of your outfit.

Middle Layer

This next layer is fun. After you’ve put on your most comfortable pair of straight leg jeans and tucked in your turtleneck or tee, it’s time to add a cozy sweater, belted vest, or cute cardigan as your middle layer. This layer keeps you warm and stylish. It also needs to fit with the look of your base layer.

The middle layer is where you’re introducing more colors, textures, or patterns to your overall outfit. Consider a neutral-toned plaid woven vest with a belted waist and a long-sleeved blouse underneath. Or, try a delicate but richly-colored cardigan with puff shoulders and blouson long sleeves. Experiment with different textures and patterns until your base and middle layers fit your aesthetic perfectly.

Outer Layer

Your coat or jacket will be the most outward-facing layer. It keeps you toasty and it also ties your whole look together. Think about the length of your coat and if it’s going to be longer than your other layers. Mid-length coats or jackets usually work well because you don’t have to worry if they will be long enough. Crop jackets are cute, too, if you’re wearing the right pieces underneath. Your middle layer may peek out a bit from the bottom of the jacket, or it may be completely hidden underneath.

Your choice of outerwear is an important part of your overall outfit. It can serve as the finishing touch to your ensemble. Does it look seamless or natural with the colored jeggings you are wearing? Does it feel comfortable over your other layers, and does it lay smoothly? Have fun experimenting with winter layering this year!
